The benefits of the vegetarian diet functional properties in the prevention of cutaneous aging
Abstract
The action of the free radicals is the main cause of aging. Possessing an odd number of electrons, the radicals try to bind itlsevesto other molecules in order to gain stability, causing oxidative stress. The damage caused by these reactions can be prevented through the antioxidants produced by the body and obtained through food and topical use. The antioxidants stabilize free radicals, preventing the cellular structures oxidation. The intake of fruits, vegetables, cereals, fibers and carbohydrates has a lot of antioxidants and has an antiinflammatory effect in the body. This paper gathered scientific information with the purpose of demonstrating how the vegetarian diet proves beneficial in the prevention of aging, by prioritizing the ingestion of plant foods, an antioxidant supply. However, the range of studies on the influence of the vegetarian diet on aesthetics is still very low, thus, there is a need for more in-depth studies on the benefits of this diet in the cutaneous aging prevention.
